ROLE: Understanding in
Science
Wiley, Goldman & Graesser
| Participants view
plate tectonic web pages on a computer from various pre-selected sites.
They are doing research to write a report on the cause of Mt. St. Helen’s
eruption. Participants have fifty minutes to peruse the websites, while
wearing an eye-tracking device. The eye-tracking device used will be
the ASL-501 Eye-Tracker. The participant will think aloud, while the
session is video taped. Think aloud is a way for researchers to know what
the participant is focusing on. It consists of reading aloud what
they are reading and commenting on the material. After viewing the
websites, the participant will have forty minutes to complete either a
description or argument about what caused the eruption of Mount St. Helen’s.
The participant completes a concept recognition test before and after the
experiment, a reliability ranking on the seven sites, a 6-point
reliability scale, and evaluates a peer essay based on the information
found during research time, and an internet usage survey. |
